February 2020 New Heights Newsletter

In the February 2020 edition of the New Heights Newsletter, Pastor Dan reflects on being “Patiently Content”, there are upcoming church events, an update on our relationship with Crossroads Church, and more!

I’m not the most patient person.  To be honest, I’m actually fairly patient with people (except Marsha and Nathan at times). It’s things, inanimate objects, that I struggle to exercise patience with the most.  I’ve been know to talk to things I’m working on with anger and frustration (even throwing them across the garage) when they are “not cooperating with me”.   Psychology Today defines impatience as “When we have a goal, and realize it’s going to cost us more than we thought to reach it. If you sit in your room with a blank mind, you will not be impatient. You’re just there. Now, if you decide that you want to go out and do something fun, you have adopted a goal.” It’s my goal of getting a project done within a certain amount of time (often not enough) mixed with circumstances that thwart that goal, that causes me to be impatient.  I know many of you also struggle with this and can relate to it!

I’ve realized that being impatient does not lead one to a life of contentment. God wants us as His followers to be content in our lives. The Apostle Paul shares his secret to being content in Philippians 4:11-13 “Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. 12I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. 13For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength” (NLT).  As I’ve matured as a Christian, I’ve made great strides in this area. I’m much more patient and contented today than i was before. Thanks and praise to God and His grace for His transformative work in me!

How would you grade your contentment level today? Are you able to be content no matter the circumstances you face? Paul says he was content whether he was satisfied or whether he was in need. His secret was drawing on Christ’s power for strength. Are you facing unmeetable needs today? Are you dissatisfied because you don’t have what you want? God’s challenge for us is to learn to rely on God’s promises and Christ’s power to help you be content. He will supply all your needs, but in a way that he knows is best for you. Let’s be “patiently content”.  Let go of impatience and be content in Christ and His timing.

In August of 2018, New Heights Community Church moved to Crossroads Church IGH (a satellite campus of Crossroads Church Lakeville) and began renting space from them. Since that time, God has blessed us with a wonderful relationship with Crossroads.  Doors opened for us to do shared ministry together such as a once a month joint-worship service, Grocery Giveaway, Sandwich Sunday (packing sandwiches for the homeless after church), weekly Children’s Ministry and Youth Group, Community Block Party outreach in August, mission trip to Mexico, and more. Both churches have expressed a desire to continue and deepen this process of shared ministry.

On Saturday January 25, Crossroads Church held a Day of Vision meeting where among the many items discussed and approved was a tentative plan of moving forward toward a merger with New Heights. The next day, Sunday January 26, New Heights held our Annual Congregational Meeting where we too discussed this same plan. Both churches voted to move forward with this tentative merger plan.  This plan entails moving to a full programmatic merger starting on Easter Sunday (Since we already do most of our programs together, the biggest change will be a move to weekly joint-worship). Later this year, there will be discussion and a vote on a full administrative merger where the two churches will become one church in all respects. When this happens, Pastor Dan will be the Inver Grove Heights campus pastor over both churches.  Details on an administrative merger have yet to be worked out.

God has given us a sense that we are better together – that we can impact our community for the Kingdom of God more effectively together than if we remain separate. Please keep this journey toward deeper partnership in ministry and possibly becoming one with Crossroads in your daily prayers.

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. ” – 1 Corinthians 13:13
