NEW HEIGHTS REFLECTIONS: “Making the Most of Autumn”

September marks the end of Summer and the beginning of Autumn. Our children return to school.  Our vacations are over.  We start a new church year.  Summer tends to be a laid back time of relaxing while the coming of Autumn signals a return to our routines, busyness and stress. For many of us, this presents a challenge.  How will we respond to this challenge?

In my daily Bible readings, I recently read Ephesians 5:15-17 “So be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise. 16 Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days. 17 Don’t act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do” (NLT).  Here the Apostle Paul tells us to consider carefully our way of life and make wise choices.  When God presents us with opportunities for His Kingdom, we are to react thoughtfully and make the most of them.

These truths from God’s Word got me thinking about September.  How are we doing spiritually heading into Autumn? Maybe we should do a quick spiritual self-check?  Ask the Holy Spirit to evaluate how you spend your time, talents and treasure (money). You may be surprised!  As a committed follower of Jesus, our activities and pursuits should reflect a life lived for Him.  If they don’t…

How can we follow Paul’s wisdom for wise living?

1. Realize that without Jesus, all is in vain – Jesus Christ offered Himself as a sacrifice to pay for our sins so that all who believe in Him could be forgiven and receive eternal life. Without salvation and a personal relationship with Jesus, all of your time is wasted.

2. Reflect Jesus – This Fall, we’ll be doing a sermon series called, “Reflecting Jesus”.  God wants us to imitate Him in all we do (Ephesians 5:1).  We do this by walking in love, turning from sin, and trying to learn what is pleasing to God. Of course, imitation requires that you know Jesus, His ways, and His desires by reading the Bible, putting its Truth into practice daily in our lives, and having a growing, intimate relationship with Him!

3. Make the most of your time. Moving through life with little thought or reflection results in hours spent on endeavors that, in an eternal sense, are fruitless and a waste of time. The apostle Paul warns us to be wise in making the most of opportunities. Ask the Holy Spirit to make you aware of divine appointments He as for you on His (and our) schedule everyday.  Maybe it’s an appointment to encourage the downcast, help someone in need, or share the hope in Jesus to the hopeless. Whatever it is, make the most of your time!

Corrie ten Boom said, “The measure of a life, after all, is not its duration, but its donation.” Make the most of this Autumn by significantly donating to the Kingdom of God!

SMALL GROUPS: Going to church on Sunday is great and is a spiritual essential. But did you know that if you truly want to grow as a disciple of Jesus, you need to be involved in a small group Bible study?  Small groups are places where we grow closer to each other, share our burdens, pray for each other, wrestle together with the Biblical text and apply it to our lives, and more! We have several small group Bible studies to choose from to fit your schedule.

  1. Women’s Discipleship Brunch – Saturday, September 28th at 10:00 am at Marsha’s home located at 8146 Dawn Ave in Inver Grove Heights.  See Helen for more information.
  2. Men’s Discipleship Breakfast – Every other Saturday morning at 8:00 am. The next meeting is Saturday September 14th at Perkins Restaurant on Robert St in West St. Paul.
  3. Unafraid Bible Study – Mondays at 6:00 pm in the Conference Room. This Bible study’s purpose is to create a community of believers who are unafraid. Unafraid to seek God together. Unafraid to love one another. Unafraid to struggle with scripture together.
  4. Thursday Bible Study – 6:15 pm at Andrea’s home in Cottage Grove starting Thursday September 19 and studying the Book of Joshua.

Contact Pastor Dan at (651) 216-0923 today to get involved in a small group Bible study!
