August 2019 New Heights Newsletter

In the August 2019 edition of the New Heights Newsletter, Pastor Dan reflects on “Suffering to Comfort”, there are upcoming church events and more!

NEW HEIGHTS REFLECTIONS: “Suffering to Comfort?”

Let’s say you are currently going through tough financial times, which person would you be most drawn to for comfort – one who has rich parents and has never struggled financially in their entire lives or someone who has gone through tough financial times and came through with God’s help?

If you are currently going through physical struggles with illness, who would you be most drawn to for comfort – someone who has never been sick a day in their lives or someone who recently struggled with the same illness but God helped them through it?

If you recently lost a loved one to death, who would you be most likely to go to for comfort – someone who has never lost anyone close to them or someone who recently lost their parent to a tragic death and was able to find comfort through their faith?

In all three above examples, the answer is obvious.  When we seek comfort due to the suffering we are going through, we are drawn to people who can relate to us because they have gone through the same thing. All of us have wondered why God allows us to go through difficult times. Has it occurred to you that the reason we go through much of our suffering is so that we can comfort others who will go through similar suffering in the future?

2 Corinthians 1:3-6 says, “All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. (4)He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us. (5)  For the more we suffer for Christ, the more God will shower us with his comfort through Christ. (6)Even when we are weighed down with troubles, it is for your comfort and salvation! For when we ourselves are comforted, we will certainly comfort you. Then you can patiently endure the same things we suffer.” (NLT).

So the next time you go through a difficult time,  ask God to help you be aware of who may be coming across your path that you could comfort. The suffering you went through could very well be solely for the purpose of you blessing another who is going through similar pain right now.  I pray that the Holy Spirit will open our spiritual eyes to see these opportunities to bless others through the difficulties we have gone through.
