NEW HEIGHTS REFLECTIONS: Heavenly Father’s Day

Father’s Day this year is on Sunday June 16th.  This will be my third Father’s Day since losing my father to lung cancer in July of 2016. Those of you who have lost your dad know that Father’s Day can be a day where you are reminded of your loss and how much you miss your father.  But on the positive side,  Father’s Day now revolves around my son Nathan hopefully doing something nice for his old man and expressing some sort of appreciation for my love, provision and parenting skills, lacking as they may be. This makes Father’s Day for me a day of ambivalent feelings.

As I was further reflecting on Father’s Day, I came to a realization.  It doesn’t matter if your father is still with you to celebrate on Father’s Day. It doesn’t matter if you have a child who will honor you on Father’s Day.  Anyone who is a follower of Jesus Christ can celebrate Father’s Day because we have a Heavenly Father who is worthy of celebrating every day!

Romans 8:14-17 says,  “If the Spirit of God is leading you, then take comfort in knowing you are His children. 15You see, you have not received a spirit that returns you to slavery, so you have nothing to fear. The Spirit you have received adopts you and welcomes you into God’s own family. That’s why we call out to Him, “Abba! Father!” as we would address a loving daddy. 16Through that prayer, God’s Spirit confirms in our spirits that we are His children. 17If we are God’s children, that means we are His heirs along with the Anointed, set to inherit everything that is His. If we share His sufferings, we know that we will ultimately share in His glory” (VOICE).

Paul says in this passage that God is our Father if the Holy Spirit is leading us. He has adopted us into His family and we are full heirs along with Jesus to the new and abundant life offered to us in this world and for eternity. We are children of the King.  Because of this, we need not fear.  In fact, we can refer to God the Father as “daddy” because that is who He is and He will always be there for us! Wow! That’s incredible Father’s Day news.

So this Father’s Day, while you are out celebrating in the backyard, at a restaurant, or a picnic in the park, take a few moments to look up to the sky and say, “Happy Heavenly Father’s Day” to God. Tell Him as His precious child how much you love Him and appreciate everything He has done for you. And may your Father’s Day be truly blessed and full of joy!
