NEW HEIGHTS REFLECTIONS:  “Living Among Spiritual Skeletons”

At New Heights, we seek to reach those in our community who need to have their lives transformed through an encounter with Jesus Christ.  But for those of you who have been actively involved with New Heights, you know that this can often be a frustrating.  Many people we encounter and share the Good News about Jesus’ love seem apathetic toward God.  They are focused only on this physical world and are ignoring the spiritual.  They are alive physically but without a life-giving relationship with God, they are spiritually dead.  Skeletons moving and walking around is an image often used in horror movies to scare us. But what if we are truly living in a horror movie?  What if we are living among spiritual skeletons? If so, what can we do about this horrible situation?

Ezekiel was a prophet to the Jews after they had been exiled to Babylon around 600 B.C.  He apparently felt the same way about the people he was prophesying to.  No one was listening.  No one was responding to his call to repentance.  But one day, God gave Ezekiel a vision of just what is possible when one serves a God who is almighty.  Ezekiel 37:1-10 says, “The Lord took hold of me, and I was carried away by the Spirit of the Lord to a valley filled with bones. He led me around among the old, dry bones that covered the valley floor. They were scattered everywhere across the ground.  Then he asked me, ‘Son of man, can these bones become living people again?’ ‘O Sovereign Lord,’ I replied, ‘you alone know the answer to that.’  Then he said to me, ‘Speak to these bones and say, Dry bones, listen to the word of the Lord! This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Look! I am going to breathe into you and make you live again!  I will put flesh and muscles on you and cover you with skin. I will put breath into you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the Lord.’  So I spoke these words, just as he told me. Suddenly as I spoke, there was a rattling noise all across the valley. The bones of each body came together and attached themselves as they had been before.  Then as I watched, muscles and flesh formed over the bones. Then skin formed to cover their bodies, …and the wind entered the bodies, and they began to breathe. They all came to life and stood up on their feet-a great army of them.”

What an incredible vision for a discouraged prophet!  God offered Ezekiel hope for a nation of people who could be compared to dry bones spiritually – skeletons.  Ezekiel was right when he replied to God’s question about whether these dry bones could live again by saying, “you alone know the answer to that.”  Notice that it is God and Him alone that makes the dry, dead bones come to life.  All Ezekiel had to be was obedient and speak the word of God to the bones.

Here are some lessons for us from Ezekiel’s vision. First, it is only God that can make the dry bones of our community come to spiritual life. Second, like Ezekiel, we need to faithfully and obediently speak God’s Word to these people.  Third, we know that God moves in the spiritual realm only when we commit to pray persistently.  If we as a church would commit to be faithful in these three things, I believe we would see God move in this community in a miraculous way.  The dry bones of our community would come to life!  The spiritual skeleton apocalypse would be forever thwarted!  – and that would be awesome!

“Only God Himself fully appreciates the influence of a Christian mother in the molding of character in her children.”  – Billy Graham

The most important thing a father can do for his children is to love their mother.” – Henry Ward Beecher

She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future. 26When she speaks, her words are wise, and she gives instructions with kindness. 27She carefully watches everything in her household and suffers nothing from laziness. 28Her children stand and bless her. Her husband praises her: 29 “There are many virtuous and capable women in the world, but you surpass them all!” 30Charm is deceptive, and beauty does not last; but a woman who fears the Lord will be greatly praised.”  – Proverbs 31:25-30 (NLT)
