April 2019 New Heights Newsletter

In the April 2019 edition of the New Heights Newsletter, Pastor Dan reflects on Spring Resurrection, there are upcoming church events and more!

NEW HEIGHTS REFLECTIONS: “Spring Resurrection”

As I write this reflection, I’m sitting at the golf course where I work part-time. We are open for business but as I look outside, I see brown grass, leafless trees, and areas still covered by snow.  But in a few weeks, the grass will green up, the buds on the trees will break open with new leaves, and the snow will have long ago melted.  Spring will have sprung from winter and there will be much rejoicing. Spring is a big deal for a golf course!

Also a few weeks away is Easter and the celebration of Jesus’ resurrection from the dead.  I’ve been thinking more about Easter as it approaches.  To most of our culture, Easter is a minor holiday that brings to mind bunnies, colored eggs, and candy for our children.  But for us Christians, Easter is the most significant holiday of the year. Easter, the celebration of Jesus’ resurrection, is a big deal for the Christian!

Why is Jesus’s resurrection from the dead a big deal? Before we met Jesus, we were dead in our sins.  We were spiritually lifeless. Then spiritually, spring came!  In Romans 4:25 the Apostle Paul says, “He (Jesus) was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification” (NIV).  Jesus was raised from the dead for our justification.  Justification is a word we don’t use too much anymore.  Justification means that we have been declared innocent. God thinks of our sins as forgiven. Instead of our sins, He sees Jesus’ righteousness as given to us. As a result, God declares us to be blameless in His sight.  This means we have been ushered into the Kingdom of God.  We are promised new life – both now in this world and for eternity in paradise restored! Isn’t Easter cool?

April is here! Spring has sprung! And Jesus has risen from the dead!  Make Easter a big deal this year by allowing the truth of the resurrection to spring into your heart anew and to transform your life.

If Jesus rose from the dead, then you have to accept all that he said; if he didn’t rise from the dead, then why worry about any of what he said? The issue on which everything hangs is not whether or not you like his teaching but whether or not he rose from the dead.” – Timothy Keller

The devil, darkness, and death may swagger and boast, the pangs of life will sting for a while longer, but don’t worry; the forces of evil are breathing their last. Not to worry…He’s risen!”  – Charles R. Swindoll

The resurrection completes the inauguration of God’s kingdom. . . . It is the decisive event demonstrating thet God’s kingdom really has been launched on earth as it is in heaven. The message of Easter is that God’s new world has been unveiled in Jesus Christ and that you’re now invited to belong to it.” –  N.T. Wright

In short, I didn’t become a Christian because God promised I would have an even happier life than I had as an atheist. He never promised any such thing. Indeed, following him would inevitably bring divine demotions in the eyes of the world. Rather, I became a Christian because the evidence was so compelling that Jesus really is the one-and-only Son of God who proved his divinity by rising from the dead. That meant following him was the most rational and logical step I could possibly take.” – Lee Strobel
