In the February 2019 edition of the New Heights Newsletter, Pastor Dan reflects on spiritual tidying up, there are upcoming church events and more!

NEW HEIGHTS REFLECTIONS: “Tidying Up with Tithing”

The “Tidying up with Marie Kondo” show on Netflix is all the rage right now.  For those who are not familiar with her show, she helps people declutter by having them ask themselves, “Does this item bring me joy?” If not, she encourages people to donate the item to charity or discard it.

This got me to thinking, maybe we all could use some spiritual decluttering in our lives?  Maybe I could start a show called “Spiritual Decluttering with Pastor Dan”?  You would watch it wouldn’t you?  Anyway back to reality.  One thing I know is that if I did start such a show, spiritual decluttering would begin by encouraging tithing.  Darryl our church treasurer talked about the importance and joy of tithing during our Annual Meeting last Sunday.  The truth is that tithing simplifies, organizes, puts our priorities in order, and brings joy to our lives. It’s a spiritual declutterer!

Here are some truths about tithing:

  • 1 Chronicles 29:11 says, “Yours, O Lord, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the victory, and the majesty. Everything in the heavens and on earth is Yours, O Lord, and this is Your kingdom. We adore You as the One who is over all things” (NIrV).  If everything we possess belongs to God, then we are merely managers of God’s things.  It is God’s right to ask us to give a portion back to Him since it is all His to begin with.
  • The dictionary defines the word “tithe” as “a tenth part of something paid as a voluntary contribution for the support of the local church to which you belong.”
  • The Bible teaches that Christians should be giving one-tenth of their income to support their local church. Malachi 3:8-11 says, “I ask you, is it right for a person to cheat God? Of course not, yet you are cheating me. ‘How?’ you ask. In the matter of tithes and offerings. (9)A curse is on all of you because the whole nation is cheating me. (10)Bring the full amount of your tithes to the Temple, so that there will be plenty of food there. Put me to the test and you will see that I will open the windows of heaven and pour out on you in abundance all kinds of good things. (11)I will not let insects destroy your crops, and your grapevines will be loaded with grapes” (GNB). We rob God when we withhold our tithe. Also if we tithe, God promises to protect us from “the devourer”, spiritual forces that cause unwanted expenses and frustration. He promises to bless us financially if we tithe.
  • Corinthians 16:2 says, “On the first day of every week (Sunday), each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income.” This passage brings out four points: we should give individually, regularly, methodically and proportionately.
  • The matter of your giving is between you and God, and He always takes into account our circumstances. He knows when they are beyond our power to direct and control. The important thing is that we see giving as a privilege and not a burden. It should not be out of a sense of duty, but rather out of love for the Lord and a desire to see His kingdom advanced.
  • 2 Corinthians 9:6-7 says: “Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each person should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”

Want to declutter your life spiritually as well as materially?  Then make a commitment to God to tithe in 2019. God says in Malachi to test Him on this. Try tithing and see if all of a sudden God opens the door of blessings – both material and spiritual – on you this year!
