NEW HEIGHTS REFLECTIONS: “Happy New Year!”

As the calendar changes from 2018 to 2019, it’s common for people around us to wish us a “Happy New Year!” Having a new year that is happy is a good wish but making it a reality takes more than wishes, more than hopeful greetings from the people around us. If you really would like a happy New Year in 2019, a better strategy is to listen to what God told Joshua about 3,400 years ago. Joshua 1:9 says, “Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go” (NLT).  Joshua was about to take over leadership of God’s people from Moses.  The task before Joshua was daunting,  lead God’s people into the promised land. He had reason to be anxious, timid and afraid. The Promised Land was full of powerful kingdoms with formidable armies.  He needed God’s encouragement.

Facing the start of a new year brings to our minds the challenges we will face. Maybe it’s uncertainty about our job, health, marriage or relationship issues, school challenges, a better place to live in, or doubts about our faith and relationship with God.   Our God, the All-Powerful who created of the universe, comes to us and says, “Do not be afraid or discouraged.” Nothing will happen to you in this coming year that will surprise God.  God is in control of this world and our lives and that should bring us much comfort. The last thing Jesus said to His disciples before He ascended to heaven was, “You can be sure that I will be with you always. I will continue with you until the end of time” (ERV). Now there is a reason to not be afraid or discouraged, to face 2019 with courage, to have faith that this will truly be a happy new year!
