November 2018 New Heights Newsletter

In the November 2018 issue of the New Heights Newsletter, Pastor Dan shares about a “Spiritual Veterans Day”, there are upcoming church events and more!

Sunday November 11 is Veterans Day, a day to celebrate the courage and sacrifice of the veterans of our armed forces.  This holiday began as Armistice Day to mark the anniversary of the end of World War I. After World War II, Raymond Weeks, a WW2 veteran, came up with the idea of expanding Armistice Day to become a celebration of all veterans — an annual National Veterans Day. It became law nine years later on May 26, 1954.

On Veterans Day, there are various ceremonies around our nation celebrating the dedication of our veterans to our country.  Did you know that the official State of Minnesota Veterans Day Event is right here in Inver Grove Heights at the Veterans Memorial Community Center Armory?  During that event here in IGH and around our nation, veterans will be greeted by people like you and me with a “Thank you for your service” as we express our appreciation to them for their dedication and sacrifice to our country.

This offering of thanks to veterans for their service got me thinking – what if there was a “spiritual” Veterans Day?  After all, the Bible teaches us that we live in a world of conflict between two spiritual kingdoms – the kingdom of God and the kingdom of darkness.  There is an everyday battle for the souls of people fought with the weapons of sharing the love of Jesus by spreading the Gospel message of hope with others through actions and words.  And like in physical battles, this spiritual battle also has casualties.  Soldiers for Jesus suffer wounds, scars, hurt feelings, disappointment, weariness, and discouragement. People are tempted to give up but persevere through it all.

Wouldn’t it be nice to have a “Spiritual” Veterans Day to thank followers of Jesus for their dedication and sacrifice?  The good news is that there is such a day!  When we pass from this life to our eternal home and encounter Jesus, the Bible tells us in Matthew 25 that Jesus will utter a “Well done good and faithful servant” to those of us who served God valiantly in this life. I also believe that those already in heaven due to our faithfulness in Christ will come up to us and offer a heartfelt “Thank you for your service.  I’m here in this awesome place with God forever because of your faithfulness and obedience to Jesus. ”  What a Veterans Day that will be!  But we don’t have to wait until that incredible day.  We can express our thankfulness to those who have impacted our lives through their faith and dedication to Jesus today.

One last thought and challenge – not all of you are living a life that will bring this type of response from Jesus and others. The good news is that it’s not too late to change that.  Give Jesus and others your best in the time you have left in this life. Make an eternal impact on others as you look forward to that future Spiritual Veterans Day!
