NEW HEIGHTS REFLECTIONS: “The Wrong Questions to Ask”

As a follower of Jesus, it is important for us to ask God the right questions, not the wrong ones.  As a pastor, I’ve heard a number of wrong questions from people like:  “Can I do _____ and still be a Christian?”, “How far can I go physically with my boyfriend/girlfriend before it’s sin?”, “How much can I drink or smoke before God says it’s wrong?”, “Is it okay for a Christian to gamble a lot of money?”  My experience is, when people ask these sort of questions they already know the answer.  They are just looking for justification from a pastor for what they know is wrong.  Romans 14:23 says, “If you do anything you believe is not right, you are sinning.”

These are the wrong questions because they reveal an underlying motive of trying to do the minimum for God (just enough to keep us out of trouble with Him). But does this approach work in any other area of our lives?  If we do the minimum required in our marriage, what is the quality of the relationship with our spouse that will result? If we do the very minimum required to parent our children, will that help them to grow up to be the person God wants them to be?  If we do the very minimum required at work, will we win the favor of our supervisor and advance in our career?  Why should things be any different with God?

Instead of asking the wrong questions, we should all consider asking God the right questions.  What followers of Jesus should be asking is, “As a Christian, what can I do to be closer to God?”, “How can my choices please God and glorify Him?”,  “How can what I do be a witness to others of the transformation Jesus has done inside me?” 1 Corinthians 10:31-32 says, “So if you eat, or if you drink, or if you do anything, do it for the glory of God. Never do anything that might make other people do wrong…”

The truth is, the most valuable thing you can have in this life is God’s blessing upon you.  God is very clear in His Word on this – we receive the fullness of God’s blessing when we give Him our best and obey Him.  When we give our minimum to God (or less than that and indulge in repeated sin) He can remove His blessing from our lives.  Nothing this world offers is worth that!  So let’s commit to asking God the right questions.  Let’s give Him our best rather than trying to get away with the minimum.  You will never regret it!

New Heights needs a new place to meet for worship because Mt Bethel Church has informed us we need to leave by September. The new incoming pastor wants to use the space we are renting for a contemporary service of their own.  We are currently considering renting space from Crossroads Church located at Upper 55th Street & Babcock in Inver Grove Heights.  We (the people of New Heights) viewed the facility after church on Sunday May 20th and the reaction has been favorable.  We are now beginning the discussion of the details in renting. There are also several other possibilities we are considering so please keep New Heights in your prayers!

We at New Heights believe strongly that our small group Bible studies will deepen your understanding of God’s Word and give you an opportunity to ask questions and apply the Bible to your life. We also spend time each week praying for each other’s needs. Our small groups are also a place where you can meet new people and form deep and meaningful relationships that can encourage and uplift you. We have 3 Bible studies to choose from:

1)  Thursday Evenings at 6:15 pm at Pastor Dan & Marsha’s home located at 8146 Dawn Avenue in Inver Grove Heights studying the Book of Revelation.  Leader: Pastor Dan (651) 216-0923. This group will go on summer break sometime in mid-June.

2)  Women’s Bible Study – Once a month on a Saturday morning at 10:00 am at various locations in our area. Contact Marsha at (651) 270-5923 for more information.

3)  Men’s Discipleship Breakfast – Every other Saturday morning at 8:00 am at various locations in our area. This group is now on summer break. Contact Pastor Dan at (651) 216-0923 for more information.

We have an exciting Children’s ministry program at New Heights! We believe the Christian education of our children in solid, biblical instruction is of the utmost importance.
