January 2018 New Heights Newsletter

In the January 2018 edition of the New Heights Newsletter, Pastor Dan reflects on a New Year, there are upcoming church events, and more!

NEW HEIGHTS REFLECTIONS: “On a New Year”

For many people, the coming of a New Year brings a moment of reflection.  We reflect on the year just passing into history and perhaps set goals we would like to accomplish in the New Year.  The ancient Greek philosopher Socrates said, “The unexamined life is not worth living“.  As fare as we know, Socrates was not a believer in our God but his statement is certainly true!  Did you know the Bible isn’t silent on the concept of reflecting on our lives?  Luke 14:28-30 says, “But don’t begin until you count the cost. For who would begin construction of a building without first calculating the cost to see if there is enough money to finish it? 29 Otherwise, you might complete only the foundation before running out of money, and then everyone would laugh at you. 30 They would say, ‘There’s the person who started that building and couldn’t afford to finish it!’” (NLT).  Here Jesus, through illustration, is teaching us it is wise to reflect and think through our decisions thoroughly.  Don’t make plans without weighing the cost in resources and sacrifice necessary to make your goal a reality. Every New Year, there are countless resolutions made to improve lives but the quickly fall to the wayside because people’s resolve was overestimated and the cost was not accurately counted.

So taking Jesus’ and Socrates’ advice, my challenge to each of you is to reflect on three questions as we end 2017 and enter into 2018.  The three questions are:

1. What was the most significant event that happened to you in 2017?

2. What lesson did God teach you through that significant event?

3. How can you put that lesson into practice in 2018 by setting some spiritual goals for yourself?

Please share with me your answers to these three questions and I will commit to pray for God to do great things in your life in 2018.  That He would give you the power of the Holy Spirit to accomplish your spiritual goals in 2018.  God bless you and have a Happy New Year!

- Pastor Dan

NEW YEAR PONDERINGS:

Resolution One: I will live for God. Resolution Two: If no one else does, I still will.” – Jonathan Edwards

Instead of making a New Year’s resolution, consider committing to a biblical solution!” - Mary Fairchild

If this is to be a Happy New Year, a year of usefulness, a year in which we shall live to make this earth better, it is because God will direct our pathway. How important then, to feel our dependence upon Him!” - Matthew Simpson

Renewal is rooted in faith, not in resolutions! They are made for New Year’s and forgotten on an average of thirteen days later, say the surveys. Faith is the result of a decision about Christ. I cannot make a new me or a new you, but Christ can make you new and me new, as well, if we decide for Him.” - Frank Harrington
