NEW HEIGHTS REFLECTIONS: “Hope for this Christmas”

Hope is in short supply this Christmas. From the threat of war from North Korea, to the rising frustration with our current political situation, to the rash of recent natural disasters,  hope seems very elusive.  Instead of the usual gifts under the tree, maybe what we really need this Christmas is the gift of hope.  But where can we find hope in such hopeless times?

Romans 15:13 says, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

A verse in the Christmas Carol “O Holy Night” says, “A thrill of hope; the weary world rejoices, for yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.”

God the Father sending His Son Jesus into this world offers hope, and hope, as the song says, provides a thrill to our souls.  If faith is what we give to God, and hope is what He gives to us, then we can receive the gift of hope this Christmas during these trying times.

These thoughts are the basis for our Advent sermon series.  It’s called “Christmas Hope”.  We’ll be looking at the hope God gave Mary who was humble and didn’t think she had anything to offer but was mightily used by God.  Then the shepherds heard the angels sing and they received hope for a Savior and release from bondage to their sins. And finally, there is Simeon, an old man looking for hope for the future of Israel.  When he saw the baby Jesus, he expressed hope for eternity.  Also on Sunday December 10, we’ll hear the message of Christmas hope through our children as they present to us their annual Christmas program.

We all need hope this Christmas.  Be sure to come to New Heights this Advent to receive the thrill of the true gift of hope!
