NEW HEIGHTS REFLECTIONS: “An Autumn Walk with God”

October is here!  Although this month often saddens me because summer is gone and I know what is around the corner (the “W” word), the month of October here in the northland of Minnesota also can be very beautiful.  I often enjoy walks in October.  Seeing the brilliant colors of the changing leaves, the crisp autumn air, watching the wild animals prepare for winter, and marveling at the beauty of God’s creation, are all benefits of an October walk. It can be a time to really connect with our God who created such beauty for our enjoyment.  But did you know that going for a walk with God in October can be a metaphor for our lives here on earth?

An October walk got me thinking of a Bible character named Enoch.  Genesis 5:24 says, “Enoch walked with God; one day Enoch could not be found, because God took him” (NCV).  We learn more about Enoch in Hebrews 11:5-6 “By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death: ‘He could not be found, because God had taken him away.’ For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God. And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him” (NIV).

Enoch was whisked away by God in the autumn of his life, spared the pain of death, and transported immediately to God’s side, all because of one simple thing: He walked with God and lived a life that pleased Him.

My years as a follower of Jesus have taught me that walking consistently with God in life is not always easy: temptations come, the business of the world screams, our selfish desires get in the way, someone wrongs us and we want revenge, people pat us on the back and we seek even more glory for ourselves, we often lack faith and instead try to control outcomes ourselves instead of relying on God.  Yes, a consistent walk with God is challenging!

Enoch walked with God.  Wouldn’t that be a great if what was said of Enoch was also said of all of us at New Heights?   How do we walk with God like Enoch?  Walking with God means we daily give up our desire to navigate our own lives and instead take the path of faith in Him. We submit to God’s timing and don’t demand answers from Him now.  God is seldom early, but never late. Only day-by-day faith-walking under the power of the Holy Spirit pleases God.

So this October, be like Enoch and go for a walk with God. During each step, marvel at what He has done.  Choose His route and not your own.  Be amazed at what He shows you along the way.  And if you have some free time this month, go out and see the color of the autumn leaves too!

“Those who walk  with God always reach their destination” – Henry Ford

Day by day, morning by morning, begin your walk with Him in the calm trust that God is at work in everything….It is your personal business, as a discipline of your heart, to learn to be peaceful and safe in God in every situation….Remember, friend, where your real living is going on. In your thinking, in your reacting, in your heart of hearts – here is where your walk with God begins and continues. So when you start to move into trusting Him, stay there. Don’t wander out again into worry and doubt!” – Anne Ortlund

“Anyone who truly walks with God, walks humbly. The closer we draw near to Him, the more we behold His majesty!” – Beth Moore

Brave men walked on the moon, daring men walked on the ocean floor, but wise men walk with God.” - Leonard Ravenhill
