NEW HEIGHTS REFLECTIONS: “Our Independence Day”

As you know, July 4th is the celebration of our nation’s independence.  In 1776 our forefathers signed the Declaration of Independence declaring that the 13 Colonies were now free and independent from the rule of Great Britain.  If you remember your history, the Declaration of Independence was only the beginning.  What followed was seven years of bloody war as Britain tried to regain control over the Colonies.

Did you know something very similar goes on inside each of us as followers of Jesus Christ?  When we first put our faith and trust in Jesus as our Lord and Savior, He declares us independent from the bondage of sin.  Romans 6:17-18 says, “In the past you were slaves to sin–sin controlled you. But thank God, you fully obeyed what you were taught. 18 You were made free from sin…” (ERV).  This is our independence day – the day we became a follower of Jesus Christ.  The day our eternity with God was sealed by Jesus’ blood that was shed on the cross to pay the penalty for my sins.   My independence day is in April.  When is yours?  Maybe we should have a big fireworks display to celebrate our independence day from sin for each of us Christians!

But like the seven years of Revolutionary War that followed our country’s Declaration of Independence, we too have a continuing struggle against temptation to sin. Jesus wants to encourage us to never go back to the slavery of sin.  Galatians 5:1 says, “So Christ has truly set us free. Now make sure that you stay free, and don’t get tied up again in slavery…” (ERV).   Our challenge then is to be sure we stay in the freedom Jesus offers us – to win our revolutionary war against sin.  May we never return to a life of slavery to sin!

So let’s celebrate our nation’s independence this July 4th.  But I want to challenge you to pause for a moment on the 4th and reflect back on that day you were declared independent from slavery to sin by Jesus Himself.  Take a moment to thank God for this day.  Share with a family member or friend how thankful you are the Jesus freed you from sin.  Live a life that declares Jesus’ power to free you and I from slavery to sin!

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT:

It is a fact that the Lord Jesus has already died for you. It is also a fact that you have already died with the Lord Jesus. If you do not believe in the death of your sinful self with Christ, you will not be able to receive the effectiveness of death with Him – freedom from sin.”    - Watchman Nee

Christian liberty is freedom from sin, not freedom to sin.” – A. W. Tozer

“The secret to freedom from enslaving patterns of sin is worship.  You need worship.  You need worship.  You need great worship.  You need weeping worship.  You need glorious worship.  You  need to sense God’s greatness and be moved by it – moved by who God is and what He has done for you.” – Tim Keller

“And you will know the truth and the truth shall set you free.” – John 8:32
