NEW HEIGHTS REFLECTIONS: “A Groundhogs Day Inspiration!”
I recently saw an ad for one of the cable TV channels. They were offering a marathon of the 1993 move Groundhog Day on Thursday Feb 2nd. If you haven’t seen it, Groundhog Day is a comedy/fantasy movie staring Bill Murray, Andie MacDowell, and Chris Elliott. Murray plays Phil Connors, an arrogant Pittsburgh TV weatherman who, during an assignment covering the annual Groundhog Day event in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, finds himself in a time loop, repeating the same day again and again. After indulging in hedonism and committing suicide numerous times, he begins to re-examine his life and priorities until he finally “gets it right” and his life moves on to Feb 3rd and then the rest of his life with his newfound wisdom.
Thinking back to this movie I’ve seen several times got me thinking. Besides the cute furry groundhog (Punxsutawney Phil who really isn’t that great of a weather forecaster), are there are some valuable things to take away from this movie? What if I got caught in a time loop and had to live a single day over and over again until I got it right in God’s eyes? How many days would it take me? How many days would it take you? The Bible teaches us that God wants us to give our best each day for Him. 2 Timothy 2:15 says, “ Do your best to be the kind of person God will accept, and give yourself to him. Be a worker who has no reason to be ashamed of his work, one who applies the true teaching in the right way.”
My challenge for us this Groundhog Day is to give it your best for God. I’m not talking about being perfect, but giving your best. This starts with prayer, asking God to give you strength through the power of the Holy Spirit to do your best. Keep God close all day long having Him guide and direct your steps. Ask Him for wisdom to make choices that glorify God (James 1:5). Ask God for divine appointments to help the hurting and share the Good News about Jesus through our actions and words. Then on Friday, do the same. Then on Saturday and Sunday and so on, keep giving God your best.
The result of taking on this challenge? A life well lived, full of inner peace and joy. A life that when you see Jesus face-to-face, He will clearly state “Well done good and faithful servant” (Matt 25)!
