In the May issue of the New Heights Newsletter, Pastor Dan reflects on Mother’s Day, there are upcoming church events, an update on our move to Mt Bethel Church and more!
NEW HEIGHTS REFLECTION: “Mother’s Day”
During May we devote a day of appreciation to our mothers. Mothers Day occurs on the second Sunday in the Month of May – on the 8th this year. It is situated during a wonderful time of the year with summer approaching, flowers blooming, and refreshing spring breezes.
The holiday was started over 100 years ago by a mother who was concerned about the plight of poor people in Appalachia. In 1905, a woman named Anna decide to raise awareness and was successful in establishing a national holiday in 1914, when it was signed by President Woodrow Wilson. She did this in honor of her mother who worked to end the sanitation problems in Appalachia. The holiday quickly became an occasion for commercial gain when people began buying Mother’s Day cards and gifts, which disappointed the founder.
A holiday for mothers isn’t just an American idea. Other countries celebrate it too. For example, in Britain servants and apprentices who worked for professional people were allowed visits to employee’s moms. Gifts in the form of sweet breads were given in honor of them. The day came to be known as “Mothering Sunday” and was celebrated prior to the Easter season. In ancient Greece they worshiped a Greek god called Cybele. The Romans worshiped a god called Juno. The Romans dedicated a holiday to Juno on behalf of moms on a day called Matronalia. Honoring moms is certainly not exclusive and original to America.
Many of you, like me, have been blessed by God with an awesome mother. It’s been a special pleasure for me to be of assistance to her this past week as she went through hip replacement surgery. I don’t know of many more ways the love of God is demonstrated more powerfully in this world as it is through the love of a mother for her children. My thought was that the least I can do to show what her love meant to me by returning that love through service in her time of need. If you have the opportunity, take time on Mother’s Day to show how much you love your mom, not just with a card or over-priced flowers, but through an act of service and love toward her. God, your mother, and even your own heart will be blessed! – Pastor Dan

Our last Sunday at the Veterans Memorial Community Center will be on Sunday May 8th. A special thanks to the Community Center for being great hosts for us these past years. We are looking forward to the exciting things God will do as new opportunities of ministry open up for us. Keep praying for a smooth transition to our new home for worshiping and service God.
